Maha’s Ring 💍

The story begins in 2020 when Covid hit the World. My sister told me that the Gold price went down so it won’t be a bad idea to go shop for some nice pieces. When i was at the Gold stores, i realized that i never really had my own ring; so i thought i should buy myself a ring that expresses my personality. I found a nice sleek golden ring with a dark crimson fake stone in it’s oval shaped center, with some stars and hearts engraved into it, and 10 small crystals surrounding it. I bought it and I have been wearing it ever since. 

This ring lived all different experiences with me. Joyful moments, sad times, happy times, times when i am doing research, other times when i am making ceramics, or metal pours, a lot of times when i am painting, and so much more.

I decided to make this ring an etheral shared performance between me and you. It was just an idea in my head with some unfinished research until YSA’25 came along. So i thought, perfect. This is a great oppurtunity to introduce this ring to a sofisticiated audience like the people of Jeddah. 

The ring had a semi life until the year 2024. In summer 2024, I went to an anime convention in Chicago. It’s one of the biggest ones here in America where everyone cosplays fantastic characters. I was cosplaying Yor from Spy Family, I was having fun all around until I found myself in the middle of a lightsabers battle with this experienced knight. My friends were cheering me loud MAHA MAHA MAHA!!! I lost the first round, then i lost the second round, but guess what! i was studying the movements of my oppoenet. I won the last round leaving my friends and all the fans who circled us around jumping out of shook joy! LOL! that was awesome.  

I leave the circle where that battle took place and suddenly i look at my ring! The golden frame was slit open that the fake stone fell off! I thought this is not just an incident; it meant something. I went back home and I started researching types of stones, metals, and materials used in jewelery that were mentioned in the Holy Book of the Qur’an. My research came down to modifying the ring to it’s upgraded version: ‘The Coral and Pearls Ring’ because of the word-root studies that i did to find a suitable stones for the current states of the ring. The arabic word for Coral is “Marjan”; it comes from the same word root of “merging two elements or more”. I searched all vereses that contain that same word root to also find: (يخرج منهما اللؤلؤ والمرجان) and (مرج البحرين يلتقيان) - These studies support replacing the fake stone (that already fell off) with a coral stone and the crystals with natural pearls. Why the coral and pearls? because of their nature complementing each other as fire and water elements, respectivly; matching my current state as an interdiscplinary artist. This is an interactive performative act and research that will be updated regularly to track what happens to the ring and why.
